PINT A-NZ Explained: The Shared Standard Behind AU & NZ eInvoicing
PINT A-NZ explained: the Australia-New Zealand Peppol billing profile, how it relates to PINT and BIS Billing 3.0, and who governs it (ATO and MBIE).
PINT A-NZ in one sentence
PINT A-NZ is the Australia-New Zealand specialisation of Peppol's international PINT model, based on Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 and jointly governed by the ATO and MBIE — the single invoice standard both countries validate against. For where it sits relative to the wider framework, the Peppol vs PINT difference sets the scene.
The three layers
It helps to see PINT A-NZ as one layer in a stack:
| Layer | What it is |
|---|---|
| Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 | The semantic base for billing documents |
| PINT | Peppol's international model for country specialisations |
| PINT A-NZ | The Australia-New Zealand profile that ships on top |
BIS Billing 3.0 supplies the underlying meaning of an invoice. PINT is Peppol's framework for building regional specialisations from a common core. PINT A-NZ is the specialisation Australia and New Zealand actually use and validate against.
Who governs it
PINT A-NZ is jointly governed by two authorities: the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Australia's Peppol Authority, and New Zealand's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). That joint governance is the point — it makes PINT A-NZ a genuinely shared standard across the Tasman rather than two similar national profiles. It is also what underpins the trans-Tasman one-provider model.
Why it is not European BIS
A common and costly mistake is assuming a European Peppol invoice will work in the AU/NZ context. It will not. PINT A-NZ is not interchangeable with European BIS Billing 3.0. Both descend from Peppol foundations, but they are distinct specialisations with different rules. A document built to the wrong profile typically fails validation, so you must validate against the current PINT A-NZ artefacts, not a European profile.
The transition dates
The move to PINT A-NZ is already complete:
| Date | What changed |
|---|---|
| 15 November 2024 | All AU/NZ Peppol service providers had to support PINT A-NZ invoices and credit notes |
| 15 May 2025 | Legacy A-NZ profiles no longer supported — PINT A-NZ only |
If you are still mapping to an older A-NZ profile, that path is closed. See PINT A-NZ only in Australia for what the cut-over means in practice.
A quick self-check
- [ ] Are your invoices built to PINT A-NZ, not European BIS?
- [ ] Do you validate against current PINT A-NZ artefacts?
- [ ] Have you retired any legacy A-NZ mappings?
- [ ] Do both invoices and credit notes conform?
- [ ] Does your provider keep the profile up to date as it evolves?

Frequently asked questions
- What is PINT A-NZ?
- PINT A-NZ is the Australia-New Zealand specialisation of Peppol's international PINT invoice model, based on Peppol BIS Billing 3.0. It is the shared invoice and credit-note standard that both countries use on the Peppol network, and it is jointly governed by the Australian Taxation Office and New Zealand's MBIE.
- How does PINT A-NZ relate to Peppol BIS Billing 3.0?
- PINT A-NZ is built on Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 and expressed through the newer PINT model, which is Peppol's framework for country-specific invoice specialisations. In practice, BIS Billing 3.0 provides the semantic base and PINT A-NZ is the regional profile that Australia and New Zealand actually validate against.
- Who governs PINT A-NZ?
- PINT A-NZ is jointly governed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Australia's Peppol Authority, and New Zealand's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), New Zealand's Peppol Authority. This joint governance is what makes it a single shared standard across both markets.
- Is PINT A-NZ the same as European BIS?
- No. PINT A-NZ is not interchangeable with the European Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 profile. Although both derive from the same Peppol foundations, they are distinct specialisations, so you must validate documents against the PINT A-NZ artefacts rather than a European profile.
- When did PINT A-NZ become mandatory?
- Since 15 November 2024 all AU/NZ Peppol service providers had to support PINT A-NZ invoices and credit notes, and since 15 May 2025 the legacy A-NZ profiles are no longer supported. From that point PINT A-NZ is the only accepted profile for Australia and New Zealand.
- What is the PINT model?
- PINT is Peppol's International model for billing. It provides a common core with a defined way to create country or regional specialisations, so different jurisdictions can align on shared semantics while still expressing local rules. PINT A-NZ is the Australia-New Zealand specialisation of that model.
- What happens if I send the wrong profile?
- A document built to the wrong profile, such as a European BIS invoice sent into the AU/NZ context, will typically fail validation because it does not match the PINT A-NZ rules. Always validate against current PINT A-NZ artefacts before sending to avoid rejected invoices.
